I just felt I had to get the rant out somewhere so I don't put my whole foot in my mouth at work tomorrow. I do so enjoy being able to pay my rent and keeping a roof over my head.

I know it's not just me but I am just frustrated at my lack of understanding here. Who knows maybe I will be an evangelist at this time tomorrow because smarter people then me have shown me what I am just not seeing at the moment.

Sure motor oil has its uses but why would I start frying my sausages in it just because castrols management told me to?

There must be a case where LLMs have their uses, right? And not just for scamming people?

Sure Sam Altman is convinced this is the future. If the ceo of castrol was out there telling us that motor oil was the future and we would all be left in the dust if we didn't use it for everything would we not be a bit skeptical?

Smart people keep telling me that he has a magnificent frock on, and maybe he does? People with a lot of money running on this seem very convincing, but why would we take their word for it?

There must be a use case I am missing? Something that this thing does well that I am just not seeing. Some scenario in which this thing actually helps me? Because from my vantage point this particular emperor does not seem to have a stitch of clothing on.

If a person wrote something they chose every word that went into it. Why would I assume that I can have something else, something with no understanding or ability to reason, boil it down for me without missing something essential? Without adding something that changes something fundamentally?

And if the text is not available how do I know that the summary is accurate? If I have to double check the work why not do it myself and build my mental image and my knowledge in the process?

People keep telling me it can be used to explain concepts and summarize this and that, but that you need to verify the information. Why then would I not just go to the primary source myself? I know how to skim a text if need be.

I use it as I am told to use it by people who are in higher positions, people who have been here longer. I am seeing people around me write 5-6 prompts to get a command right that takes 30 seconds with a man page to find.

The negligible time savings of the first example is quickly eaten up by the second.

Sure I could go double check the name in the first place before running it but in that case why not copy and paste it from there in the first place? What is the use of a tool that I have to verify the output from where the verification takes longer than just doing the thing myself?

Occasionally it autocompletes to a method name that looks right enough at first glance that the flaw isn't noticeable until a trial run hits that point ten minutes later.

Occasionally it saves me ten seconds to replace one word with another across multiple lines but it'd be just as quick to use search and replace.

I've got it enabled in my IDE and sometimes it autocompletes with something useful, most of the time it just throws suggestions while I type that are not want I want or intend and just serve as a distraction breaking my train of thought.

IBM releases new mainframes regularly. With fairly robust back- and forward compability guarantees. You don't hear about it often but this is very much something that is still in active development.
