I'm delighted to learn from Fiona MacCarthy that one of my favourite Byron lyrics was written, not in a mood of romantic ennui as I had imagined, but in a "state of sexual exhaustion" after 6 weeks of non-stop "divetisements", "buffooning" and "incognito assignations" at the Venice Carnival of 1817
