I am amazed by our community strength and resilency in this moment, grateful for the leadership of Siembra, the Carolina Migrant Network and so many others, and also hate that this is necessary. Let's do this now so we don't have to do this again.

We drove around Charlotte in patrols coordinated by Siembra NC and looked for signs of ICE activity. While we were at the grocery store, one of the employees came out and with a shopping cart full of bottled water and gatorade and $40 to buy us lunch at the taco truck.

Many of the sweeping budget cuts in the recent Congressional Budget (the so called BBB) take place over the next 2 years but I fully expect we will see dramatically conservatized local and state budget proposals this spring as they brace for impact and try to avoid mass layoffs in 2027.

Eventually, the position is eliminated after having been vacant for a period of time. The net effect is a reduction in force without furloughs and layoffs. One of the most prominent examples of this has been the elimination of teacher assistants (TAs) over the last 15 years in NC Public Schools.

I'm most familiar with the this practice or pattern in public schools where there are budget cuts and instead of mass layoffs school systems first move to a hiring freeze and then don't rehire for staffed positions as people leave due to retirement or taking another job.
