"Being helpful" to developers / researchers way the written goal of the other guy as well. That's a very vague justification though.

Lookup the original post and read the comments if you want to see what the users thought about it.

The last time it wasn't about anonymous downloads, it was about users being part of datasets that can be used for machine learning etc. without giving consent. You even hydrate the data now.

And you can't control what people are doing with the data once they download it... It's a thin line I'd say.
