From the fourth chapter of my sci-fi #WIP, a vision of Chicago in 2085.

Still in first draft, so forgive the clunkiness.
His left arm, which was cradling the holo, dropped to his side and the display vanished. He looked out the window at the oak tree lined street. In many of the more economically flush areas of Chicago, there were arboreal canopies over the roads as the impeccably cared for trees lined the sidewalks and medians. It was an initiative that started before Adrian was born when the efforts to eliminate “metro blight” became paired with a crusade to end “city sick,” an alleged malaise that occurs from experiencing years of a complete lack of nature. Adrian had heard that city sick wasn’t a real malady because people had been living without contact with nature for decades about a century ago. He also couldn’t fathom modern medicine not being able to cure the issue: If someone was generally unhappy, they were rejecting therapies.

She looked at him with a curdled stare, a terror’s echo haunting her mind. Her mouth was slightly agape with her lipstick smeared from a burgundy into a gradient of color next to her lip. “Do you know your name?” Silence continued to follow his inquiries. “Well,” Fischer started with a beat before his ramble, “I can see you’re circulating just fine with enough O2, so, we seem to be looking at an emotional state of shock here. I’m sure an AI therapist would do just fine, but I’ve found that flesh n’ blood is a bit more effective. I’m going to try to contact some relatives of yours for additional support. Only thing is, you know your family better than I do, so—” Fischer stopped as he was glancing down at the holodisplay to see a list of likely or known family contacts. The data began to morph slightly as though he was hallucinating, first shifting in waves as the letters and numbers restructured themselves into prematurely formed alternative characters, then blurring and brightening until there was a snap that relinquished the data’s participation in reality. The records were gone, including the name of the woman in front of him. She no longer existed within any of the national databases he had access to.

Writing sci-fi futurism is a lot trickier than I expected to write effectively as you have to lean on real science and the real trends of human progress a lot more than just making up your own rules about everything. Nonetheless, progress is happening: I've hit the 40k mark.
