Agree. It also got slammed for failing to be some sort of answer or evolutionary step to Star Wars to which it was always compared. It was an entirely different movie with older characters. Few reviewers of the time stopped to consider it from that perspective.

And I don’t think the fact that George agreeing with losing the scene detracts from the point that suggesting background details rather than explicating them would have continued to work. A lot of authors later novels could use sharper editing.

Source on her suggesting them? That they were in the shooting script and shot suggests a change of mind on George’s part at least. And still suggests they found a better paced movie in the edit. I have read there were concerns that the early droid focus would cause the audience to lose interest.

The new editors hired after John Jympson (the original editor) was let go left a lot of exposition (early intro to Biggs Darklighter) on the floor just as a way to reinforce your point that suggesting the wider world was all you needed.
