If by rattled you mean "clarified and defended" then sure.

Nothing wrong with picking this battle, but he is not backpedaling, and he is not rattled.

AI probably isn't esoteric enough. Ubiquity of AI means a cult based on it would be like a cult based on smartphones.

"we're trolling"

I accept your surrender

Don't be scared. The Pope mobile will protect everyone from him.

I can guarantee you I have more experience than you with life outside the US.
May 9, 2025 at 4:15 PM
"American" as a demonym for the US is regularly used outside of the US.
May 9, 2025 at 4:13 PM
He's the first. Francis was from South America, a continent.
May 9, 2025 at 4:07 PM
Canadians regularly call people from the US "American". What might be less common is calling the US "America", which wouldn't bee relevant here since people are objecting to an "American Pope"
May 9, 2025 at 4:02 PM
Is true!!! Canadians would call a Pope from the US an "American" Pope.
May 9, 2025 at 4:00 PM
Canadians call the US "America". See e.g. the Canadian movie "My American Cousin".
May 9, 2025 at 3:57 PM
Canadians regularly use America to mean the US. See e.g. the Canadian film "My American Cousin".
May 9, 2025 at 3:57 PM
Not US speakers. English speakers. British, Irish, Canadian, Australian etc all use America to refer to the US.
May 9, 2025 at 1:18 PM
USian is fine too. It's just less common.

Similarly, Mexico is officially "The United Mexican States", but English speakers use the term "Mexican" instead of "USMians"
May 9, 2025 at 12:47 PM
And that's fine. "America" as referring to the US, is an English feature (E.g. Used in the US, Britain, Canada, Australia, Ireland etc). Nobody expects the non-English speaking world to adopt English convention.

You have it backwards. They can't void the usage. "America" will continue to refer to the US among English speakers. There is nothing to stop on my part.
May 9, 2025 at 12:40 PM
Most of the continents have their own languages. E.g. Peruvians usually use "Estados Unidos" and that is perfectly fine.
May 9, 2025 at 12:38 PM
Usage determines correctness. You might as well say the French are wrong for calling cars "voitures" instead of "cars", or say English speakers are wrong for calling Mexico "Mexico" instead of "United Mexican States". Also, shooting is not generally taught in America.
May 9, 2025 at 12:31 PM
Some people on the internet can't void actually existing usage on the grounds that they don't like it.
May 9, 2025 at 12:26 PM
Correct. The new Pope is also American, which in English refers to the US.
