This was such a cool project and I'm really proud to have art in this incredible book with so much amazing art and writing! Was amazed when Brian told me that my pictish byrehouse illustration would be one of less than five detailed depictions in existence!

Couple pages from my comic in this book, as a taster!

still finishing the last couple of these in my own time - i plan to make them into a book in the new year!
pencil drawings of two figurines. one is a little creature with six legs and a big head cvered in blunt spikes. in it's mouth it holds a large stone age hand axe. the other is a kneeling humanoid figure with little wings and no head. in its arms is propped a stylised adze, a kind of ancient hand tool like an axe crossed with a hoe. 25, The tool held by this grave guardian figurine from the Ozo barrows is far older than the guardian itself. Several other tools, pieces of hide clothing, and human and animal remains were found within the barrow, each held in the mouth of a figurine which was clearly from a much later period than the remains themselves. Archaeologists estimate the difference in materials and technologies between the stone tool and the bronze figurine represents at least a thousand years. What is the oldest thing you’ve ever held? Did it fit your hand? Did you find its weight reassuring, or a burden? 26. Stone figure of Khop, one of the thirty funerary saints of the ancient Iskite people. Khop holds a ceremonial adze used in the ritual of ‘the opening of the mouth,’ one of the traditional parts of the embalming process, during which the adze would be used to split the wrappings over the deceased’s mouth and eyes, so that perfumed wax could be poured into the mouth and throat. This figurine, like many in the surviving tombs of the Iskite, was beheaded by inquisitors after the uprising of Returned Dead, whereupon the funerary saints were deemed blasphemous and improper in their embalming process. Look at he rough stone where Khop’s head has been broken off. What sort of tool do you think was used to break it? Was it being used for its intended purpose? What is an adze for, really?

there are so many specific kinds of lamp people have made, I've had a lovely evening looking at them.
pencil drawings of two lamps - one is a humanoid shaped candleholder, with the candle in a bowl held in the figure's arms. dribbles of wax have run over the edge of the bowl and down the arms and dress of the figure. her face is obscured by a buildup of soot from the flame. The other lamp is a clay vessel shaped a bit like a pig with a gaping mouth and several holes for eyes. 23. Votive candleholder from the crypt of Phlegistones the Undying. Toward the end of his reign, it is said that Phlegistones developed a great fear of the dark, and a beleif that if he remained always in well-lit spaces, that death could not reach him, as death only lived in the shadows. His tomb was filled with over 4,000 lanterns and candles, and sooty remains suggest that they were all lit when he was interred. of course, once sealed the tomb had poor ventilation, and the flames would quickly have been extinguished. Look at the soot covering the candleholder’s face. The candle would have burned so close to her eyes. Have you ever stared into a flame, and felt it draw you in? 24. Oil lamp in the shape of a beast, from the excavations at Mord Lake. Little is known about the people who made this lamp. It is designed to have its hollow body filled with oil, and a wick of twisted cloth or reeds poke out of the mouth and lit, so that it appeared to have a tongue of fire. This fearsome lantern guarded the single burial chamber unearthed at Mord, an otherwise simple and unmarked burrow with scarcely room for the body interred within. No other traces of the people of Mord have been found at this point. Count the beast’s eyes. What was it watching for, do you think? Do you sleep with a light on? Does anything watch over you?

One of the crowns is jewelled with hanging beads obscuring the mummy's face, and large eye-shaped ornaments oer where the eyes would be. the other crown is tall and shaped like a lotus flower, with a small black snake winding between the petals. the stone figuurines are both of a faceless figure seated on a stone chair, with a tall two-spiked crown on their head. one is roughly hewn and has a fat tummy and large breasts. the other is slimmer and has clothing etched into it. 21. Two examples of protective “crypt crowns”, from the Enniz and Dopamenaj Kingdoms respectively. Crowns like these were worn by mummified bodies, and allowed the protective spirit of the tomb to inhabit the body and use it to repel intruders. In more ancient versions, the elaborate crown is reduced to a simple eye motif, or, as in the Dopamenaj example, a brass serpent coiled around the skull of the deceased. Look at how bright and shiny the metal of the crowns is, against the preserved skin of the mummies. Are things that shine more alive than things that don’t? Do you feel like something is looking at you? Who is it? Did you come here to be looked at, or to look at things? 22. Representations of the “King under the earth” from the 3rd and 12th eras of the Margine Civilization. Represented by a (usually) seated figure with a featureless face and tall, two-pointed crown, this figure seems ot be a guardian of crypts, catacombs and other subterrenean spaces meant to be enclosed and left undisturbed. Popular rumours of the terrible misfortunes that befall anyone who enters a space guarded by the King have largely been debunked. These specimens were bequeathed to the museum by the widow of the explorer Eardmund Aufel, and are displayed with gratitude and condolences. What forgotten spaces are under your feet? Who waits there in the dark? How would you ever know?

some fun with fashion for this one.
pencil sketch of a ceremonial suit of armour, and a pair of shoes. the armour is hung on a frame so it stands upright. it consists of a smock with a long train behind it, and woven armour on the upper arms and collar, and a pair of loose trousers. the whole suit is patterned with stylised upside-down bodies, representing dead people. the shoes are lace up oots with pointed toes in a medieval style, made from pale, speckled and creased leather. there is dirt under them as if leaking from the soles. 19. Uniform of a high-ranking necropolis attendant, Labastrine. Though most of the grave guardians in this collection are objects or symbolic creatures, some were real people. Grave robbing became rife in the Labastrine city states, especially after the waves of Midas fevers, which left many people with bodies compsed partially of precious metals and stones. Necropolis attendants were armed warriors who had sworn to defend the dead with their own lives. Their ghostly white armour speaks to the prestige they held, and to the popular beleif that in pledging to defend the dead they had themselves given up their living souls. Look at the crisp white linen of the uniform. Layers of reed and wooden armour provide protection underneath the fine cloth. Look closer. Can you see any stains, faint, but too old to wash out? 20. Human leather boots. Origin Unknown. Donated from the collection of the Honourable Lord Obham in 2013. The toes of these unusual shoes are stuffed with earth. Wiggle your toes. Imagine feeling dirt between them. Where did it come from? Imagine if the dirt was inside your skin. What then?

#Objectober 9: Weight! just some big beefy guys.

Two of the more striking examples of grave guardians as statuary figures which physically incorporate the vessel in which the deceased is interred. This figure from the labyrinth-tomb of Emperor Gnialogous V11 holds the remains of one of the emperor’s highest-ranking generals. damage to the sarcophagous suggests it slipped from the back of the statue several times, before being secured with the cords that hold it. accounts from the time suggest this may be because the sculptors building the statue did not know exactly who would be inside the sarcophagus, as the emperor’s favourites changed so rapidly, and so could not account for the weight or size of the body. Conversely, guardians such as this cask-demon from the Lower Red Delta were often mass-produced, designed to fit the large cinerary urns used as standard to store the cremated remains of the deceased. The designs of these demons gained progressively longer legs as flooding in the delta increased, and sculptors tried to ensure the remains would be kept above the water. Look at the stick the minotaur holds. It is made of stone, but someone gave it a stick to lean on. Look at how the demon strains to keep its head above the water level. Can you see the tide-marls on its legs? Do the rocks need our help? pencil sketch of a stone sarcophagus. the sides are carved with skull and talon designs. the lid is carved to look lik a sleeping figure, with a bird-headed goblin crouched on top of them, its talons pressed to their head. 18. Little is known about this unusual sarcophagus, which is beleived to originate from somewhere in the Argish Islands. Analysis of the remains inside suggest the occupant may have been alive when interred, and a collection of iron pendants and coins placed around the body may have had ritual significance, perhaps to denote a person of religious importance, as this is obviously a richly detailed burial vesesl. At some point the face of the sleeping figure carved into the sarcophagus lid has been destroyed, roughly carved away with a chisel or similar implement, and though we do not know why this was done, it is notable that the figure crouched atop the “sleeper” has been left untouched. Look at the worn stone of the sarcophagus. it has been carved to look like a soft bed for the figure to lie on. Look how the figure’s flesh has also been carved to look soft, and bend under the weight of the creature that crouches on top of them. Look at the creature’s talons, how they curve so close to where the sleeper’s face would have been. Is it soft, the place where you sleep? Are there ever talons, or chisels there?

15. A rare example of an intact 7th Era death clock, believed to originate from the cities of Nil. The exact function and mechanism of death clocks is still not understood, as even during their period of use the art of making them was closely guarded by master clockmakers. The Death clock was wound during the final hours of a person’s life, and then set to run, without winding or any other maintenance, until an undefined future point. It could then be used by divination mechanics to communicate with the spirit of the deceased, using signals such as the position of the hands, movement of the pendulum, or the chiming of the clock. Death clocks reputedly fell out of favour quite rapidly, as it became evident that whenever the clock finally ceased to tick, it would invariably coincide with the death of everyone in the room. Can you see the cogs and mechanisms inside the body of the clock? They are still and silent now, but they used to twitch and interlock and move. Are clocks alive? 16. both of these artefacts were initially thought to be toys for children. Forensic examination revealed that they contain human remains, and are likely “nomad caskets,” a little-known tradition practised by various travelling communities of the Seed Routes. The larger cart (16a) was sized for a small goat or dog to pull, and contains a casket in which a limb and parts of the head of a person are preserved, carefully mummified, and then protected by the stone figure seated on top to guard the casket. The smaller casket is only a few inches high, and contains several finger bones. Both would have been ritually wheeled around the perimeter of a camp whenever the nomadic group stopped, to invoke the protection of the important ancestral figures interred within. Both of these items were confused with toys for many years. Do you have any toys that look like these carts? Do you know where they came from? Are you sure?

I am very tired but I got to touch a lot of different animals today and they were all soft.
pencil drawings of two kites and a spooky guy. one of the kites is shaped like a bird with a humanish head, a skeleton and flaming heart painted on it. the other kite is a lng dragon form made from overlapping circles, with sticks with streamers and sharp talons sticking out at the sides. the spooky figure is dressed in a robe made from whole marten skins, with a long snouted wicker head, mostly covered by a crown of mutated deer skulls. 13. These temple kites from the Yolara Mountains were flown at times of air burials. Bodies were placed on the roof platforms of the temples, and the kites, acting as protective spirits, prevented anything but the sacred red vultures (Neophron sanguineus) from feeding on the deceased. Made from paper and bamboo, the kites were often bedecked with silk streamers on which spells and prayers were written, asking the vultures to take care of the spirits of the deceased. Look at the painted designs and sharp claws on these kites. Have you flown a kite before? Did you give it organs or weapons? 14. The grave sites of the pre-collapse Delicate Empire were considered forbidden by the ensuing Robust Empire. As such they erected “sentinel totems” like this one, to warn off trespassers and to prevent stray souls from escaping the bounds of the graves. As more relics were unearthed of the previous Empire, tradition became to “gift” these items to the sentinels, both to avoid the bad luck that clung to these remnants of a fallen Empire, and to appease the sentinels and make sure they were treated with respect. This wicker sentinel wears a crown of mutated deer skulls, and an extravagant robe of marten skins, which would likely have belonged to a high-ranking member of the Delicate Empire. Can you count how many tails are in the sentinel’s robe? Look at the soft fur. Do you think it would keep you warm if you stood outside all night long?

back on my bullshit thinking about weapons
pencil drawings of four fictional artefacts. three are wooden stakes with creatures carved into the tops: a curvy humanoid figure, a stag's head, and a crouching ape. the other is a statue of a warrior with a bestial face and a crest on its head, and a humanoid body, missing one arm. the other arm holds a pitchfork. 11. Grave markers from the Blandish Communities of the Blue-grey Era. The Blandish Communities faced rampant predation by vampires, ghouls and other undead, and in response started to adopt the traditional grave markers to a dual purpose. The hand-carved protector spirit would still mark the grave and protect it, whilst the long stake that the protector perches upon would penetrate into the grave and pin the body to the earth, preventing them from arising to prey on the living, without outwardly marking them as undead. Look at the way the wood has been carved at each end; to a sharp point, and to a complex, detailed figure. Do you think the same tools were used for both tasks? Look at the staining on the end of the stakes. 12. This grave guardian from the Mud Necropolis of Ospra was likely stolen from a much wealthier tomb - the city had a flourishing black market in stolen gravestones, shrines and other accoutrement of mourning. As it was strictly forbidden for anyone but a noble to possess a weapon, the guardian’s weapon has been replaced with a farming tool, and thus it could be set to protect a commoner’s grave without their family worrying about being punished. The statue is missing an arm. What do you think it was holding in its lost hand? Does your hand remember holding something that is lost to you?

A graveside figurine from the White Barrows of Pterophore. These small figurines were placed beside the extensive collection of canopic jars within the Barrows. What do you think they feel like? Where do you think the hairs came from? 10. This reliquary idol is made from the skin, hair and teeth of over thirty different creatures, glued and sewn onto a wooden frame. Though the provenance of the idol is not known, it was found with a set of tools to maintain and add to the hair, and inscriptions on the brush handles suggest that the hair was taken from deceased people and given to the idol to stengthen it for some unknown purpose. How many different colours of hair can you see on the figure? Does any of it look like your hair? What do you think your hair would look like after a hundred years in the dark?

No human remains have ever been found in any excavation of the 5th Civilisation of the Thorny Canyon. The reasons for this are unclear, though some writings suggest that this is because almost all citizens died outside the canyone, en route to a fabled “Land of Eternal Breath.” Shrines have been found, however, indicating a form of ancestor worship. Shrine demons in the shape of houses contain shelves or nooks in which dolls painted with the likeness of deceased people are housed. There is evidence that children were encouraged to play with and decorate the dolls, to maintain a connection with passed love ones. Look at hair of the doll. It is made of soft yarn, and someone has braided it. A fountain from the Great Ossuary of Solaster. Fountains such as these were used to cleanse the body before and after entering the main chambers of the Ossuary, in order to wash away any ill influence, either from the outside world, or from the dead within. The many chambers of the Ossuary each had their own fountain, so a mourner or attendant visiting the deeper bone-sanctums would wash many times on their way in and out. Many visitors found it shocking that so many children lived and played within the Ossuary, but this was commonplace, especially as the Great Gnawing saw many orphans left under the care of religious institutions such as this.
