LEARNINGS Back in my recap of my Big Bang pieces I talked about trying to achieve a more painterly style, but getting caught up in refining details. For that piece the noodling was not only in direct conflict with my end goal, but also contributed to some early burnout on the pieces. This piece was a HUGE step in the “keeping it loose” direction and ironically I think it is becasue of the tight and smooth rendering required of latex. Whenever I was working on Price’s chest, or an arm, or some hair, and found myself starting to noodle - I could quickly jump over to the latex and zoom in and turn off my brain refining some of those details. This kept me jumping around the piece and only ever bringing an area to a certain level of refinement before I was able to get my nitpick fix by cleaning up another latex area. It also meant that there was a sort of fixed end to finishing the piece. Once the latex was done, there would be nothing stopping me from falling back into old habbits. Knowing approximately how long I had left on the shiny bits, I was able to set a date where I’d be calling the piece done regardless of what state everything was in. Knowing my weakness for nitpicking, I gave myself an outlet to indulge that weakness while still trying new things and keeping the turn time tight to avoid burnout. I can always find a reason to go back and work on any of my old pieces - none of them are really ‘done’ because I can always find something I would do differently or improve in older works. Part of the drop dead the latex provided me was an actual sense of finality. Knowing ahead of time that there were going to be bits that I normally would change but forced myself to call done meant that once posted, it felt finished. Even though, ironically, it is probably one of the most unfinished pieces I’ve done with it’s impossible anatomy and inexplicable light sources. But, as a wise man named Nedry once said, NOBODY CARES. Let yourself call things done.

I’m not exactly the youngest dude in the fandom and this represents the first time I drew in *years* - looking at where I am now I have to thank the fandom for helping me find that joy again. 🩶

If you’re a movie buff you might recognize these poses from Platoon - used as reference so hard that I think I accidentally made Soap look like he’s related to Charlie Sheen.

Steps 04 and 05: Color and Rendering
Plus some easter egg callouts, a process breakdown, and some final thoughts.
STEP FOUR: RENDER Drop Rough Color in and Work To Final A four-up of various stages of color refinement of the two pieces. STEP FIVE: FINAL Apply Color Corrections Final pieces shown side by side with some notes about visual choices below: FUN EASTER EGGS Ensuring that the two pieces tied back to not just the story, but to each other there are some intentional visual connections between the pieces that you might not have noticed on first glance. You may notice that even in different forms, their poses stay relatively consistent - Soap clutching at Price and wrapping his tail around him, Price arm raised, other hand griping Soap. But there are also mirrors in their posing, Soap’s leg overlapping Price vs. Price’s leg overlapping Soap, Soap in the background to the right vs. in the foreground to the left etc. Compositional elements such as perspective and lines were mirrored or directly continued from one image to the next alongside color carry over almost giving the two pieces the look of one scene. (Edited for character limit) If you are a creative and you haven’t participated in a community event I cannot recommend it enough - not only is it such a great way to get to know people in the community, but it’s a great excuse to push yourself to try something new. This big bang had a couple of firsts for me. It was the first time I had drawn Price aside from a previously unfinished sketch, it was my first time drawing NSFW, and my first time drawing anthro [I don’t know how furry artists do it]. Throwing a bunch of mini challenges into the mix took some of the pressure off of what normally might have sent me into a perfectionist spiral - knowing that I was trying a bunch of new things allowed me to afford myself some grace and accept that I might not be 100% my first time up to bat. Giving myself the space to try new things and to accept a level of learning made the experience much more fun and removed a lot of the stress or pressure I might have normally felt trying not to let a partner down while meeting the timeline. I’ve been on two long-term projects in the community - the first had me redoing the piece from scratch every couple of weeks because I was staring at it for too long, and this project where about halfway through rendering the second piece I was itching to work on something new. I also think I brought it a little on myself - knowing that my style varies wildly and wanting the two pieces to feel consistent, I worked on them both simultaneously. Which meant it all felt like one big drawing that was lasting me months instead of 2 projects - which had I approached it as such probably would have delayed the burnout some. As is, there is definitely a dip in the office scene’s polish compared to the handjob and a lot of things I’d change on rework but for now I’m good letting sleeping dogs lie...or sleeping with laying dogs. RUNDOWN STEP ONE Thumbnails, thumbnails, thumbnails. While I don’t normally go into *quite* so many iterations this is a step I never skip and was all the more important when working with Mads so that I could communicate direction as we dual pathed creative. It being my first time drawing NSFW I was also very pose concious and while I’m no stranger to looking at porn, I am not quite as used to having so much of it in my camera roll. STEP TWO After general poses were selected, I roughed in some color to confirm lighting / mood with Mads and give myself the composition plan before blowing the thumbnail up into a rough sketch. Here I actually start looking at character likeness, take a general stab at anatomy and background elements. STEP THREE Step three is a bit deceptive as in this case it’s more like step four or five based on the iterations between the rough sketch and final lines. Typically I subject myself to a rough sketch, a tight sketch, rough lines, final lines like a maniac. I actually really loved my linework for the handjob piece, I really liked the stylization I was able to achieve with their likenesses and felt good about the lines overall - all of which would eventually become very much buried in rendering so I continue to fight that battle of wasting effort on things no one sees and / or finding a process that keeps lines intact. STEP FOUR In keeping with the theme of trying new things and exploring new methods, for rendering these pieces I wanted to try to get a more digital painterly effect - thick digital brush strokes to help with fur and skin - to push this I dropped my color thumbnail right under my final lines, scaled it up and painted on that one layer. In the end I started noodling / smoothing and getting lost in the detail weeds with this method so I don’t think it’s for me in the long run. STEP FIVE Took my final renders from CSP to photoshop for some color / contrast tweaks as needed and added noise to larger sizes for upload.

STEP ONE: THUMBNAILS Exploration + Communication A page filled with rough thumbnails of various couple poses, location and character details, paired with rough descriptions and key callouts. STEP TWO: ROUGH SKETCH Finalize Layout - Determine Color + Lighting Final thumbnails are lined up top with rough color and lighting dropped in. One scene contains Soap and Price canoodling in a plane with cool blue lighting, the other has Price bending werewolf Soap over a̶ b̶a̶r̶r̶e̶l̶ his desk. Thumbnail comps are then scaled up into rough drawings of the two scenes where character likeness, anatomy, and background details are more clearly defined. STEP THREE: TIGHT DRAWING Finalize Composition, Elements, and Lines Final linework of handjob scene from "By My Hand" by @justfireheart13 showing half-shifted werewolf Soap receiving a less then enthusiastic handy from Price while he possessively wraps his tail around his captain and stares down the viewer.
