I confess I read my first two JA novels this fall. Not sure how I missed these all my five decades. And I got through the first during thanksgiving while folks gabbed and ate around me all afternoon 😝

Looks like it was the exterior entrance to the chapel before they added the current nave. It’s fun to see it inside the building now.

It looks to me like the apse was once a standalone chapel and the arch was its external entrance. And that at some point they grew the chapel by simply building a nave to the west of that entrance. Anyway, it’s really beautiful!

If this archway is what separates the nave from the apse, it’d be called a triumphal arch in French churches. Is that how it is referred to in the UK? Also, this is like no triumphal arch I have encountered in France.

There are similar facades to this one throughout the west of France. South of Nantes to Poitiers and all the way to Bordeaux.
