Obviously that differs from absent minded cashiers, but the real question is what should public norms be based on? Someone’s entitlement to how they think the public spaces should look or feel? Or a bilateral compromise between diverse humans (where even no interaction is a valid form of it too)?

One example of boomer politeness that makes me feel unsafe: I work in an office building with many older generations. Men will literally refuse to exit the elevator unless I (a small, female bodied millennial) exit first. Are they looking at my bum? Never experienced this in my largely genz condo.

Please be aware that often people working in customer service do so because they don’t have other options. Many such as autistic people might have different nonverbal styles. Let’s all have compassion and try to meet each other halfway with communication styles— that’s way more humanizing!

Counterpoint: I personally find it presumptuous and uncomfortable that folks I don’t know feel they have a basic right to my attention, or to engage with me physically (even without touching). There can be a lot of baggage built into these small encounters, and anonymity can also mean safety.
