This is a species of beaked whale, which is an odontocete (toothed whale). It was examined bc it stranded deceased, so it died & washed up on the shore. The scientists examine it to document the species-specific anatomy and collect samples to determine cause of death & for other research purposes.

I'm definitely not an expert on this species of beaked whale, but my understanding is that they are very deep diving and their habitat is not near coastal areas, so they are rarely sighted/encountered. I don't think there are enough data to derive a population estimate.
