There was a vague pink glow in the sky tonight but phone certainly picked up the colors. #aurora

The Salvia and marigolds are still blooming and the honeybees and bumblebees are still coming around. We are supposed to have 20’s at night next week and snow Monday, that will finish the last of the flowers. I will miss them. 🐝 #nature #autumnflowers #itsalmostover

Everything you mentioned are my favorites also. I so look forward to Fall. Cleaning out the garden, planting my garlic, displaying the pumpkins I grew. Canning the last of the green beans and waiting for the first frost. Gathering hickory nuts and pecans from our trees. Fires in the evenings.

There’s something about an insect that can turn its head when you approach, and you KNOW it is looking at you. I love these praying mantis. #nature #insectsofbluesky #prayingmantisofbluesky

I wonder how many times I’ve walked by this now empty-looking cocoon. (This wire cage is around an apple tree, I started it from an apple that is not a hybrid) There are pussytoes, Antennaria, growing close by. I found an American Painted Lady cat on them in 2023. #nature #butterflycocoons

Some random things. Yesterday I was hauling some mulch to the wildflower area and uncovered a chicken egg that had been stashed away. No, we do not have chickens, the neighbors do tho. I left it there in case the culprit comes back for it.

Every year, I go around our property digging out tree seedlings. We have different types of nut trees, and squirrels being squirrels, are constantly burying nuts everywhere. Yest, I found a seedling I didn’t expect to find and I think I will transplant it out into the yard, it is a Hackberry.

Been waiting for this tomato to ripen, had it penciled in for BLTs. I started looking and all the almost-ripe Romas were gone also. Then, deer tracks. I have since sprinkled cayenne pepper on the tomato plants and the beans, which they also tried. #gardening #forestdemoncows

A red spotted purple butterfly was busy laying eggs on a peach tree today. This egg is about 10 min old. It would land on a leaf and then back down to the tip of the leaf to lay an egg. #nature #redspottedpurple #butterflies

This is the second ‘bloom’ of brightly colored fungi next to an old Chinese Chestnut stump. The SEEK app ID says Eastern Jack O’Lantern. Poisonous. Also, this wasp was visiting the swamp milkweed yesterday. I’m having a time trying to identify it. #nature #fungi #insectThursday

Oh darn it! I missed #woodfrogwednesday! Yesterday I was trying to get the yard mowed before today’s rains came along and there were so many little, 1” long or so, wood frog youngsters everywhere. 🥰

Crocosmia, I could see this blooming from the deck yesterday. I bought this one, can’t think of the variety right now, and Lucifer a few years ago. The red Lucifer already finished blooming last week. I’m rather pleased that this one is a bit later. #gardening #blooms #crocosmia

I can’t decide which one is my favorite! 🤫 Jumping spiders are comical to me, they seem to turn to look at you when you get close.
Tiger beetles are ferocious predators. I hope to see a larvae someday.

I happened on a very curious caterpillar this afternoon. If it hadn’t been moving, I wouldn’t have noticed it. I think it may be Nematocampa resistaria or a Horned Spanworm. It seems to be suspended by silk or …? The plant it is on is Queen Ann’s Lace. #nature #caterpillars #gardening

Zebra Swallowtail in all it beautiful stripey-ness. This is the first one I’ve seen in more than 10 years. 🦓🦋 I hope it comes back, we have plenty of pawpaws for little caterpillars. #nature #zebraswallowtailsofbluesky #lantana

In the video, there are glimpses of silk behind the spider as it sneaks up on this tiny fly-like insect.

Each morning, unless it is raining I have coffee on the deck. It is a nice change to slow way down and watch spiders. Two different jumpers on 2 different mornings.

Some blooms from the wildflower garden, it’s def a work in progress. Rattlesnake master, Culver’s root. The last - I don’t remember any longer. They have changed over the years, different variations on the colors and where they occur. #nature #nativewildflowers

Moth cocoon, maybe cecropia? It is about 4” long. When do these moths generally emerge? I have been patiently waiting since mid-May. #nature #cecropiamoths

Robin rescue early this morning. This young robin was really tangled up in the bird netting over the strawberry patch. I finally got it untangled and put it under a shrub to rest. It flew off after a few minutes. #nature #birds
