Agencies informed staffers they were preparing to cut their workforces by up to half, then followed up with letters offering voluntary separation incentives. The move aimed at scaring employees into accepting the offer.

The letter urges the Justice Department to “preserve and protect the independence and integrity of the legal profession” by opposing the use of federal power to target lawyers, law firms, and legal organizations for providing good-faith representation to their clients.

Many law firms representing federal employees have come under attack. The legal community is pushing back. More than 4,000 legal professionals have signed an open letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, expressing concern over the administration’s actions against law firms.

Musk fired the entire team responsible for managing the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which supports approximately 6.2 million people across the U.S.—from Maine to Texas—in paying their heating and cooling bills.
