This video of unidentified secret police arresting a young woman for her opinions speaks more than anything else I’ve seen to how far we’ve gone, how fast, towards the most garden variety authoritarianism. We said and said that the framing of Gaza protests led exactly here. And here we are.

They're not even uniformed officers. Just secret police thugs in hoodies and masks.

One thing that always magnified protests during Arab uprisings was violence. That’s why so many dictators (most recently in Belarus) learned to wait it out. And you would think restraint is more natural to democracies by design…
