prob a larger Government Industry v. Political Industry discussion here too, but I do see your point: we don’t all define the ESTABLISHMENT the same for sure

if ‘experience in and around government’ was the threshold for becoming ESTABLISHMENT how would we classify Bernie Sanders types who consistently get reelected bc they are challenging their own party?

of course some counties are more antiestablishment than others
Andy Kim hands a third straight loss to NJ first lady Tammy Murphy in Senate primary
Kim’s victory here means he wins the county line, placing him in the same ballot column as other party-endorsed candidates.

Take Passaic & Hunterdon in the Murphy-Kim primary. Passaic (v estab) had closed door vote awarding Murphy their endorsement without releasing vote totals (iirc) while Hunterdon prepared to hold open vote until their estab. chair tried to change the rules. So they voted in an antiestab chair.

he’s not longer a congressman *because* he antiestablishment (and was chair of an antiestablishment county)

not sure I agree. Malinowski is the anti-establishment candidate, no?

Andy Kim in support ✊
I agree. Rep Chuy Garcia’s decision to end his re-election at the last second and plant his chief of staff as the only candidate to succeed him was undemocratic and should not be allowed. (1/2)

if I were Trump and the police chief, I’d want this Epstein guy and his number two under wraps

any other modern president would be buried under enough scrutiny—even if it turned out to not be true—to essentially end their career

major supporter of Big Cannabis maybe, not people who use it
November 12, 2025 at 1:19 PM
“Scutari, who is a major supporter of legalized cannabis…” 🧐

· sent cannabis users to jail as prosecutor
· opposed decriminalization
· slow-rolled legalization so insiders had a jump
· still blocking home grow
· re-criminalizing dimebags from unlicensed shops

Ball is an exceptional campaign manager and maybe describing a ‘discipline’ campaign can sound boring after the fact—not as enticing as influencerspeak.

But it was the buttoned-up professionalism, the message discipline, and the unflinching commitment to the plan that won it for them, imo.

inviting influencers to your presser & engaging Hispanic voters (what was the alternative here?) is not special sauce

to replicate, start w significant D registration advantage, unpopular R president, twice-losing R opponent, and add backing from most powerful D operations in the state

Simple!

They ran a winning, disciplined campaign—but her appearance on Breakfast Club and other influencer-led media almost ruined her.

Memo is rosy in hindsight. She did not engage hostile media, fumbled opportunities with new media, and relied on powerful Dem machinery in Essex/Middlesex to carry her.

Sometimes, just having a chance to shape the narrative is important enough. In my opinion, challenging sitting officeholders has many benefits for the voting public that go beyond whether or not the challengers can win. Voters get more options, differing viewpoints, and more information.
