This week in The Medical Journal of Australia: A nice review about viral persistence (in bone marrow / megakaryocytes, the gut and other tissues) as cause for #LongCovid.

Mentions preventive strategies (vaccination and Metformin) and potential therapies.

Mooie foto! Heb 5 jaar tegen de Marekerk aan gewoond. Nu nog herinnering aan de muur hangen.

New review paper in Nature Review Microbiology:

“The consequences of SARS-CoV-2 within-host persistence”

Discusses persistence mechanisms, persistent infections frequency, and connection between persistence and Long Covid.

New study from Tunesia looking at cytokines and endothelial function in #LongCovid

➡️ Finding increased levels of IP-10 (100%), IL-8 (95%), IFN-γ (95%), MCP-1 (80%), and TNF-α (70%)

➡️ Increased IL-6 and IL-27 associated with fatigue while IL-8 concentrations were higher in patients with dyspnea

This is a nice review that is well worth the read - and also raises concerns of new-onset dementia as a result of COVID-19 considering the magnetude of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting Long Covid .

Neuroinflammation is expected to be at the core of Long Covid (and ME/CFS). This interesting new review from November 3th looks at potential mechanisms resulting in neuroinflammation: gut-brain axis disruption, neuroinvasion, reactivation of (herpes) viruses, and other.
November 21, 2024 at 6:57 PM
Another study from last week showing altered red blood cell morphology in #LongCovid. There have been multiple studies showing this, probably affecting blood flow + tissue oxygenation.
November 21, 2024 at 6:30 PM
"Elevated cerebral oxygen extraction in patients with post-COVID conditions"

New paper finding elevated cerebral oxygen extraction in #LongCovid. My take: most likely a compensatory mechanism due to hypoperfusion (as a result of dysautonomia +/- endothelial dysfunction). Part of it is discussed
November 21, 2024 at 6:22 PM
Another #LongCovid paper from last week using data from invasive CPET (1, not 2) combined with metabolomics:

"The metabolic and physiologic impairments underlying long COVID associated exercise intolerance"
November 20, 2024 at 10:00 AM
I love that the article quotes the late Paul Cheney, I've been really impressed by his vast knowledge about ME. A shame we have to miss him now.
November 19, 2024 at 11:18 PM
Great article from last week by Peluso in Science Translational Medicine about Long Covid and similar diseases (called Infection associated chronic conditions here).

What can we learn from the past 40 years in this underfunded and understudied field of research?

There are some significant clinical differences between the groups, but both groups share the same symptom burden. The most commonly prescribed pharmacological treatment is Ivabradine, and Pyridostigmine is more frequently used for POTS."
November 19, 2024 at 2:07 PM
New paper/abstract about prevalence of POTS and Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia (IST) in #LongCovid #Dysautonomia

"The diagnosis of POTS is more common than IST in patients suffering from post-COVID-19 syndrome, and there is a 31% overlap of patients diagnosed with both. ..

Another interesting study on tryptophan metabolism in #LongCovid

"Dysrupted microbial tryptophan metabolism associates with SARS-CoV-2 acuteinflammatory responses and long COVID"

Geen nieuwe foto, alweer meer dan 5 jaar oud. Maar wilde hem toch even delen.
