Yeah, the research on phonemic awareness activities in isolation from letters has been around for DECADES. And still, the Heggerty program was very popular. (Our kids did it at New Field.) One problem is that phonemic awareness isn't something that can be taught the same way phonics can. 1/x

It's kind of like having a sense of pitch and rhythm. Studying music usually boosts awareness of pitch, but sometimes not. Then, you might need something to train or sharpen the skill.....but you don't "teach" pitch sensitivity, you train it where necessary. 2/2.

Filming it and shouting and bearing witness IS doing something. If you're by yourself, as she was, there's really not much more you can do. If more people had stopped and shouted this story might have had a different ending, but most people just walked on by.
