Fallen Leaves and Scribbled Dreams

From an IG challenge. India ink on bristol. Scribbled quotes on dreams are adding value amongst the hatching.

Thinking of getting a fountain pen for plein air and life sketching.

Oil on wood panel. Trying to loosen up brushwork a bit. Baby steps. Using larger brushes and working a bit more wet into wet.

Grapes

oil on panel

A recent food paint challenge from IG.

First time painting on an oil ground primed surface. I rather like it. It is a slower, smelly, and messier process though.

A Nocturne

oil on panel

A limited palette moody painting.

It finally feels like autumn here. Sweater weather has arrived. I will not miss the hot and sticky days but I will miss the extra light.

An Apple a Day

oil on panel

Sitting at the cardiologist waiting. As great as he is, hopefully the adage is true and it's a while before I have to come back.

A still life food paint challenge from IG. Practice glazes using galkyd and galkyd gel.

oil on panel

Using galkyd for the first time. It dries so fast it's forcing me to make more decisive brush strokes. It's taking some getting used to but hopefully it helps me stop overworking. Trying to embrace a more place and leave it approach.

Serenity

oil on wood panel

Blue skies and calm waters. The past few days have been beautiful. Gotta enjoy them when they're given. They're little bit of peace to recharge your soul in the midst of the dumpster fire.

Sunset

oil on panel

A color finding challenge for me. Are those darks umbery, purpley, need more greysh tone? Ended up using value and warms vs cools. This exercise was a learning experience.

Cloudscape

oil on canvas 10 x 10

Working on varying brushwork more and working on a toned canvas. I toned it a pinky purple.

I used just linseed oil to keep it simple. It started as alla prima but I did a follow up session to tweak values. Trying to get to a place to work plein air.

Hostile Planet

Looking for something rather different for me, I found the reference on pixabay. It's created by ELG21 from a selection of other pix photos. It has a very sci-fi feel.

Through the Mist

oil on panel

First painting after open heart surgery now that my sternum isn't a constant pain. It's been far too long.

Keeping it painterly. Working on some atmospheric pieces and exploring mixing with limited color palettes.

The Edge of the World, Saudi Arabia.

Desert landscape in charcoal and chalk on toned paper. Exploring mark making and drawing techniques.

I have a few references saved and largely unused conte crayons and I'm thinking of doing some in a touch of Seurat style.

Mountain Chapel

A chapel in the Alps nestled on the hillside. Charcoal and hard pastel on Hahnemühle antique Ingres paper.

This one felt it took forever. Idk if it's the paper, pencils, or both. The Lyra pencils feel on the harder side.

Across the Pond

Adventures in mark making. Playing with a few new drawing sets I got for my birthday. Soft pencils go so fast. I got quite a few down to the end this month.

Sunrise Over Snow

Charcoal & pastel on prepared paper.

I painted an undertone of grey with acrylic ink on hot press paper and then added a layer of pastel ground to draw on. It holds lots of layers.
