It’s hard to imagine that the Signal chain for the Houthi attack was just a one-off, that they only went to Signal for this moment. Is this how this new government is operating routinely—off the books, in a hidden fashion designed to avoid scrutiny and accountability? ~Joyce Vance, 3/26/2025

From Timothy Snyder: Almost everything that has happened during this attempted takeover is illegal. Lawsuits can be filed and courts can order that executive orders be halted. This is crucial work.

It is Friday afternoon of a wild, wild week. And yet for me a reassuring one. My greatest fear was not of what they would do. It's that we would let them. And I'm seeing a lot of beautiful intransigence. From federal workers. From people all over the country obstructing ICE....

From Howard Zinn: “To BE HOPEFUL in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.
What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives.”

Timely lesson #4 from Timothy Snyder: “Take responsibility for the face of the world. The symbols of today enable the reality of tomorrow." He cautions us that, when we see symbols of hate, we must not look away, we must not get used to them. We must set an example by removing them.

Lesson #2 from acclaimed historian Timothy Snyder: “Defend institutions." Because our institutions help preserve democracy, they need our help. Courts, newspapers, laws, labor unions, and other institutions can fall unless we defend them from assault.

From the brilliant historian Timothy Snyder.: "Do not obey in advance." He says that most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. People think ahead about what a more repressive government will want and then do it without being asked - teaching power what it can do.
