Maybe I'm being too critical, but this NYT headline really grates on me. It assumes the reader doesn't know anyone on SNAP, or isn't on SNAP themselves. Which, I think, says a lot about who is writing the news and who the NYT sees as its audience.

Attention fellow Espooky Latinas: You have homework. Say hello to your next book obsession!

No, but seriously. These are screenshots from an actual DHS press release about this.

Living in the United States is Quite An Experience.

This is exactly what I meant by this. We know who this is for, and it's certainly not for immigrant families who don't have the option of looking away because their daily lives are impacted by immigration enforcement.

This is a huge part of the problem. H-2A workers have no idea what they are walking into when they are brought to the U.S. by an American employer, but especially a farm labor contractor. Here's a short summary of some of the shit Isabella's FLC has been involved in:

Today ICE killed Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, an immigrant in Chicago who was shot during an enforcement operation. DHS' press release about his death focused on the agency's claim that ICE agents have seen a "1000% increase in assaults against them."

I am unfortunately reading Kristi Norm’s books for a couple of pieces of writing I’m working on and Riley Gaines’ citation is so funny to me.

Having sat through a few legal reviews recently, I think the omission of Trump from the headline here isn’t just WSJ being WSJ. It’s quite strategic, especially given Trump’s recent, successful media lawsuits…

Why does the NYT persist in these narratives?
July 3, 2025 at 12:29 PM
Remember when USCIS wasn’t considered an enforcement arm?

I wish this piece I wrote for @theflytrapmedia.com weren't so timely. As soon as I saw protestors waving Mexican flags, I knew we were moments away from rhetoric....

My cat Pablito is a spectacular little beast.

The Trump admin continues targeting immigrant union leaders & labor organizers. IAM Union Local 695 member & Filipino green card holder Maximo Londonio was detained by CBP at the Seattle airport upon returning home from the Philippines with his wife. His union is calling for his immediate release.

Noem’s DHS is absolutely unhinged.

A sad update today from Migrant Justice: Some of the Vermont farmworkers targeted during a workplace raid two weeks ago have already been deported. The others remain detained.

The NYT with that hard-hitting reporting that keeps us all informed!
May 5, 2025 at 7:40 PM
Outside of basic identifying information, these are the only other questions DHS asks those considering self-deportation. If you accidentally check “yes” for the question that asks if you have enough money to depart the U.S., does DHS deny you the $1,000 promised for your self-deportation?
May 5, 2025 at 2:46 PM
I previously reported on how the Biden administration’s attempt to modernize the immigration system through tech actually made things for immigrants more difficult. I’m anxious to see how this app plays out in the deeply unfortunate cases where $1,000 is an incentive to self-deport.
