Retired chemist and academic.
And the TLO statement for chem looks very like the QAA chem subject benchmark, which doesn’t mention hours either. I have long thought that it would only take a couple of large depts to step away from RSC accreditation for it to fall apart.

It’s aligned to threshold learning outcomes TLOs which are defined for content, ps, skills, lab skills, etc. Not in terms of hours.

Sounds like you want to use titrations etc as a punishment? Learn to do titrations cos they’ve a real problem to solve. Give some real context. Chemists do titrations for a reason not for the sake of it. Make labs interesting through purpose.

If it’s 300h of didactic, repetitious labs then it is too much. But quality should be the focus. Labs are a great way to develop practical and employability skills, understand what chemists do, make decisions, use authentic assessment etc. And I think the RSC take problem solving very seriously.

Some of it is snobbery of course. Whilst many ‘regular’ research projects involve following tried and tested protocols. The qual and quant research skills that chem ed students develop are much more useful post graduation.

Good luck with those convos. The answer of course is ‘yes yes and yes’ and they already happen in so many chem depts and meet RSC requirements

You are too kind. And I know I will as I enjoyed your first one very much.

Sounds interesting. An institutional role?

What’s the new role Chris?

No problem. I do like print cookery books but my shelves are creaking.
