It's not the physio's fault, it was Ange's!

No, I've no idea how Brentford played either as I never watched them except on MotD. And yes this really is all I was thinking about in the abstract really - if any team scores loads of goals across a premier league season can you ever say they're not attacking?

OK.
November 4, 2025 at 7:46 AM
Yeah with Spurs absolutely. But that specifically wasn't Nathan's point in the video I was querying.
November 4, 2025 at 7:45 AM
Yeah, but being a team that 'has the ball' doesn't necessarily make you attacking. There were plenty of times we had the ball on Saturday and went backwards with it. And if a team scores lots of goals then almost by definition they must either be attacking somehow, or just getting very lucky.

I'm not bothered about Frank either way, but on a fundamental level I can't see how it can be true that 'scoring large numbers of goals' isn't evidence of playing 'attacking' football. It may not be the attacking football that you like to watch, but surely it's still attacking in some sense?

You're right the knock out performances in the Europa weren't easy on the eye, but they were pragmatic, effective, and defensively solid. Our performances recently against Chelsea, Monaco, Bodo, and even Wolves weren't any of the above.

My favourite bit was when they realised Spurs had had twice as many shots on target, and they had to explain how that was a 'bit' misleading rather than consider that they might have been talking shit for about an hour.

I'm not sure any of this is true to be honest. I'm certain that had a club tried to sign him (loan or perm) in the summer he wouldn't be here now. But they didn't, so he is. But what do you expect to happen now? It's not like he's going to give up, so they'll just try to get rid again in Jan 🤷‍♂️

I guess so!
October 23, 2025 at 8:37 PM
So what? You think if Solanke was up top instead of Richy, Madders was in for Simons and Kulu playing instead of Kudus that Frank's tactical approach would be vastly different? What about if Gray and Dragusin were playing Centre Back?
October 23, 2025 at 6:41 PM
One last thing - the defensive structure was literally awful last night, and against Bodo, Brighton and Bournemouth, so I'm not sure why we have to handwave that and pretend everything is proceeding to some master plan?

That said, I accept it's WIP and I'm content to watch this team develop!
October 23, 2025 at 2:11 PM
We were missing half the first team for large chunks of last season, but it didn't stop anyone judging our structure, players and results last year.
October 23, 2025 at 2:05 PM
Quite possibly, but who knows what the plan is? And why sink half a season into building the present structure if it's not at least partly what you want long term? It's just an article of faith that he is secretly planning radically new personnel and structure in January; my bet is that he's not.
October 23, 2025 at 2:03 PM
My only broad idea is that people repeatedly expressing their own hopes and dreams and dressing it up as 'tactical analysis' is something we're all guilty of, and is tedious to hear on repeat!
October 23, 2025 at 1:51 PM
I mean yeah, but TEI is guilty of this too - like in the summer Frank chose to go out and buy Palinha and then pair him with Bentancur. However much you argue otherwise on the pod, the evidence so far suggests he's not waiting to sign a passer in January, because this is the structure he wants.
October 23, 2025 at 9:05 AM
I only saw the first half last night, but I actually thought Odobert looked like our most dangerous player.
October 23, 2025 at 8:58 AM
Oh that sounds cool, but without studying the syllabus for a couple of years I doubt I'd be able to pass that exam off the bat. Does that mean I should be deported!

I've got an English Literature A level, but I'm not sure an A level in English language actually exists? It certainly wasn't offered to either me or my kids at our respective sixth form colleges.
October 14, 2025 at 10:01 PM
Fair enough. I watched the City cup final on YouTube recently and it reminded me just how good a player he was.
October 10, 2025 at 9:35 AM
Did Hoddle get 13 goals for England? He must have got a few!
October 9, 2025 at 10:57 PM
No, but they pay something, so if you have video you can easily publish the podcast as a video on YouTube, and access a whole new channel / algorithm / potential audience / income stream, for not much extra effort. Likewise you can also use clips for TikTok and IG - but it's all the same content.
October 8, 2025 at 1:30 PM
But again, that's my question - is there any statistical analysis that suggests that a team's results will tend to align with their performance data over the course of a season, or not? It seems like there should be, but I don't know, that's why I'm asking the question 🤷‍♂️
October 4, 2025 at 6:17 PM
Equally you can lose a lot of points over a long time despite having much better underlying numbers - I'm sure I read something like Spurs were above Forest in the xP table at the *end* of last season, despite their league position suggesting the other.
October 4, 2025 at 6:14 PM
Well I think that's my point! You're essentially saying that United's numbers are inflated by the chances they've created but Liverpool's are under reported because we just expect them to be better? So, the question remains, how statistically robust is performance data for making predictions?
