You're correct -- both about the facts and also about the caveats.

The 2022 team was great -- but consistently struggled against good QBs who could reliably complete short-to-intermediate passes. That was a flaw right up until the SB. However, I blame Gannon more than Nick for that.

Is the IAE making this assessment with current AI models in mind, or is it assuming improvement and efficiencies in that space?

If it's the latter, I fear there are too many variables, and the IEA probably doesn't have the expertise to account for them, for me to be super hyped about this.

(Of course, the elephant in the room for this critique is that it's unclear how much of this is Nick and how much is Hurts).
November 20, 2025 at 5:51 PM
The bad stretches endured by other coaches you mention occurred early in those seasons. Andy Reid has consistently improved his teams over the course of a year. I haven't seen that from Nick.

In 2023 they struggled with the blitz all year. This year it's zone coverage. Modern offenses should adapt

I dislike his sideline demeanor, but could live with it if I could point to areas where he is helping the team.

When the team has struggled, it seems like they righted the ship by reducing Nick's responsibilities (removing his play-calling duties in 2022 and changing coordinators in 2024).

Good article. I think all the arguments you mention have some merit, as well as the mitigating factors for each of them that you detailed.

...and your colleagues caved, giving him everything he wanted.

If you vote for Schumer's leadership, you won't be getting my vote.

I won't pretend to know what would make AJ happy. It could be that he's being a diva. I don't get that sense -- I remember the TO debacle, and this ain't it. Also, AJ is a better player than TO was. He should be getting the ball more.

It would be 100X easier to replace Sirianni than AJ.
November 12, 2025 at 5:16 PM
Who said anything about him getting the most touches?

I'm saying it's a problem that the team's best player isn't happy or productive, and that this is a knock against the head coach's ability to manage the team.
November 12, 2025 at 4:12 PM
I'm not saying he's bad. I'm just not sure if he's good.

I (and many other people) can point out his flaws. It's not obvious what he does well, which is why I'm asking.

I think the most likely answer is that he's about an average coach in a Hall of Fame system, which is a formula for winning.
November 12, 2025 at 12:08 AM
I'd argue that Lurie is the head of the system, but fair point otherwise.

Providing a good work environment for the people he hires (or his bosses hire) is a valuable skill, and it's important that his employees are happy. That's why I'm wondering why AJ Brown isn't.
November 11, 2025 at 11:40 PM
If you say so. I'm mostly asking questions, more than making an argument. How does Sirianni elevate the team?

Obviously, I could be wrong about talent evaluation, but with a top O-line, superstar WR's, OPOTY at RB, and SB MVP at QB, I'd expect the offense to be a top-3 unit. Do you disagree?
November 11, 2025 at 11:26 PM
*relative to the talent level. Or do you think Jalen Hurts is a mediocre QB?
November 11, 2025 at 11:13 PM
...and what did Sirianni do that Big Dom (for example) couldn't have done?

The Eagles clearly have a good system in place, and he's a part of that. It's not obvious that the system is better because of him. If it is, please tell me why.
November 11, 2025 at 11:10 PM
What value does he contribute? He's supposed to be an offensive-minded coach, but his offenses have been medicre at best (except for the 2 most important games last year).

If it's culture, how do you square that with the AJ Brown mess and the collapse of 2023?
November 11, 2025 at 10:51 PM
There's also tact and politics.

1. If Howie belittles the question, he sounds condescending with no real upside.

2. This way, he is able to praise AJ, which might help smooth over any bad feelings.

3. The more he talks about this the less time for other questions.

LLMs are trained to give responses that humans like. Unfortunately, humans tend to prefer "Confident and Wrong" to "Uncertain but Mostly Right".

I have a more nuanced take on this, but I think they take "dumb" (as in simple) approaches. Sometimes that's the smartest thing to do. "See ball, hit ball" can be effective. So can "stupid money". When that doesn't work you get Castellanos flailing at sliders.

Also, no smart person drinks raw milk.

Phillies have fewer advantages (but still a lot) and are not smart.
