Onosato is less heavy than Terunofuji so that’ll happen more often (for now) but also quicker on his feet so he has a line of defense (the pull) but it won’t be anywhere near as effective as his offense when he wins the tachiai.

I don’t necessarily think that’s “beating himself”. He only does that when he gets beaten off the tachiai. We saw the same with Terunofuji, most of his losses came to the guys like Daieisho, Takanosho, Takakeisho who barreled into him off the tachiai and when he went backwards he couldn’t defend.
