Following the botched execution of Daniel Wilkinson in 1885, the Maine legislature abolished capital punishment in 1887. According to “Rogues, Rascals, and other Villainous Mainers” by Trudy Irene Scee, the executioner who tied Wilkinson’s noose bungled the task. #RopeBook

The namesake of gerrymandering — the process of drawing districting maps that wildly favor one party — is 1812 Massachusetts governor Elbridge Gerry. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and is fittingly buried in the place that loves gerrymandering: Washington DC.
