That said, my favorite art direction in recent memory is dishonored because it handled that issue so elegantly. It’s realistic enough to be immersive but stylized to the point that you stop comparing it to reality. Plus it just looks incredible.

I think it depends on what you want for your game, like any art direction. Realistic will get “not realistic enough” and psx style will get “it looks old.” People will complain, regardless of your choice. Ideally you do something you’re proud of and with intention so those complaints bounce lightly

Fun fact about my life and ffx. My brother left for college and bc he bought it, I had to wait until he beat it first. I was a dud and actually waited. So I beat EVERYTHING except the last boss. So many hours. He came back and I was like so can I beat it? And he was like lol you actually waited?
