I’m not high profile enough to get much hate mail, but it’s always fun when I do. This one was quite the ride. I’ve also never written about half the things listed here, so I’m not sure if it’s responding to something specific or just some generalized disgust at me personally. Either one seems fair

This is the headline I show my students when we talk about Alabama adopting its current state constitution in 1901. I teach in Alabama

Most times I'm grateful when I don't have to go to campus before the semester starts, but this email subject lines suggests that today could have been interesting

While going through some research today I was reminded of one of the more amusing archival finds I've had in the past few years, when notes from a 1990 public safety meeting in downtown Denver explained how best to identify "Punk Rockers:"

In Philadelphia, the EVENING BULLETIN edited the final panel of the second strip to soften its criticism of Rizzo. Instead of Trudeau’s original line, the Philly version only read “I thought you were a hippy or somethin’!” I write about it, and Rizzo’s entire appearance in DOONESBURY, in my book👇👇

PROOFS! Next year Penn Press is rereleasing a few Philly-centric titles, including my first book. I’m especially grateful that the new preface allowed me to rethink the book in light of recent politics, both locally and nationally, and to finally write about the Rizzo statue’s removal. More soon! 🗃️

On the last day of a long semester, I really needed this. It's things like this note from a student that, despite everything, makes it all worthwhile. Also, a clear sign that despite efforts to curtail what we do, students haven't stopped craving real history!
