Working for safe cycling in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham.
Cycling locally and further afield (often on my eBike).
Qualified cycling instructor.
New research shows separated cycling infrastructure makes cycling safer for cyclists. There's no real surprise there, but studies back up our anecdotal experience.
Such infrastructure protects those who currently cycle and enables others to do so.

Our local force takes action 90% of the time against reckless drivers on full reports made by cyclists.
Over half have to pay for an education course or a fine and points. A third now get warning letters.
All my reports resulted in paid courses or fines/points for drivers.

Oh, and learning that essential cycling skill. Stopping for coffee.

Today I've been working with secondary school kids on advanced cycling skills. We're planning routes, riding on multi-lane roads, using roundabouts, filtering past stationary vehicles, using advanced stop lines and shared paths. Preparing the next generation for cycling for life!

Great to see signs informing us all of the new speed limits locally. We now need to see limits on residential roads set at 20mph.

The arterial road that passes our house is congested like this for most parts of most of every day. This is early afternoon on a Sunday. It now takes 20 minutes to drive the journey it takes me 5 minutes to cycle. When are we going to accept we have a serious problem?

Oh dear.

Cycling on the 2.5m length of Fahrradstraße in Konstanz is an absolute joy. And proof that the right cycling infrastructure encourages inclusive cycling. We do could do this.

Sitting in the shade looking across the water is as important as cycling.

Bodensee looked majestic today.
June 18, 2025 at 5:41 PM
We took our bikes on the train to Bodensee today and had a lovely 40k ride on a gloriously sunny day. It’s so easy to do bike-train-bike journeys in Switzerland. 1/

This is one moment from our evening ride.

Outside the city there are brilliant cycle routes, well signposted and to so many destinations. 3/3.

The centre is outstanding for cycling (and walking). When motor vehicles are allowed, top speed is 12mph. Most is mv free. 2/3

The quality of cycling infrastructure outside St Gallen centre isn’t great, but there are coherent routes from places you are to others to which you want to go. 1/3

YouGov questions again only offering a binary choice, when there’s a better option readily available to implement.

Changed my profile background to the summer version.

This was the scariest moment of our ride yesterday. The lanes were about 2m wide and they were driving at over 80mph.
June 2, 2025 at 8:50 AM
Much of today’s ride was on old railway routes.

Avante train bike storage was ok for two bikes.

Great ride today along NCN41.

New stats for WMP for the first quarter.
Police act on 80% of reports
61% getting Notices of Intended Prosecution.
There are, though, increasing proportion of NFA from previous years, and lower numbers for education courses.

The Bikeability & Living Streets campaign for Safer Streets for All asks the government to make the Highway Code better and better understood by: updating the code; raising awareness; and introducing presumed liability as part of the hierarchy of road users.

This is a significant call for change in the ways we think about our roads. The items in the list aren’t new, but together they would reduce harm on our roads roads dramatically and make travel better for us all. www.bikeability.org.uk/wp-content/u...
