It’s an interesting point. I met these crafters a few years ago using coke bottles and buttons to make a poppy display. They cut the the bottoms off litre bottles of coke painted them red and added a black button to create this for the WW1 centenary. The church had a huge list of dead servicemen

I wept when I saw this, after the Georgian Heritage project in inner Leicester - it took 3 years but then I saw the third picture.

How come? Meta argues that if "social" means time spent checking in with friends and family, then very little of that now occurs on its platforms. Today, the company reports, only 7% of Instagram time and 17% of Facebook time involves consuming content from friends. The majority of time on both apps is spent watching short-form videos that are "unconnected" - not from friends or followed accounts - but recommended by AI-powered algorithms developed as a direct competitive response to TikTok's rise.

G N The original Dutch courage, geneva (from the French genièvre, meaning juniper), was sold by chemists for tropical fevers, stomach and gall bladder problems in Holland in the early seventeenth century. It was introduced to the British during the Thirty Years War. More than two hundred years ago, the makers of gin for the Royal Navy (at 57 per cent proof) were attracted by the softness and purity of the water of Plymouth, and so proud were they of the clarity and purity of their product that they were the first company to use clear glass bottles. Plymouth Gin is still made in the old Dominican monastery, Black Friars, and is the only gin to hold a Protected Designation of Origin, singling it out as being made within the town with the soft water from Burrator reservoir on Dartmoor. The blend of botanicals includes juniper berry, peel of orange and lemon, coriander seed, cardamom, angelica and orris root, which give a unique aroma and taste when the grain is distilled for a second time. This is the original base for a dry martini - no doubt Agent 007 would expect it, lan Fleming apparently did. At the end of the seventeenth century Londoners were already drinking a half-million gallons of gin when the raising of beer taxes made it the cheapest way of getting drunk for a penny, dead drunk for tuppence. The year before 1751, when the Tippling Act demanded quality and closed the small gin shops, eleven million gallons were consumed in the capital. In the same year William Hogarth's etchings of the desperate scenes of excess in Gin Lane were contrasted with the generally wholesome and busy Beer Street. Not until the nineteenth century did it become known as mother's ruin, and gin palaces appeared, perhaps five thousand of them by the middle of the century in London, together with the Temperance movement. Gins had been made all over England in the eighteenth century, but just Plymouth and London have maintained their production. London Dry Gin is still made by Gordon's, which in 1769 located itself at Clerkenwell to use the pure water of the Clerk's Well. In England it is sold in a green bottle and is usually drunk with ice and tonic water - a combination that evolved in India as a way of taking bitter quinine to keep malaria at bay.
