Fun fact. Fleetwood Mac had as many pre-Buckingham Nicks albums as they did with the pair.

We have progressive tax rates and it’s easily seen that higher income pays higher rates.

The tax foundation data does show percent of “all”taxes received.

And I agree, the brackets should be expanded. And we need a better AMT.

The replies gave anecdotes about 1 or 2 people. There's 14 million taxpayers (top 10%) at $170k AGI or greater (prob 20mm ppl with spouses). This group pays 71% of the taxes. Per chart, top 1% pays 45.8%. That same 1% earns 26% of the aggregate AGI. You haven't countered with a single fact.

Dudette - we have a progressive tax structure (google tax brackets) and the numbers below bear out that is what happens. Look at the average tax rate below.

Doesn't mean there's not more to be done but everyone on here needs to quit making erroneous arguments because the data doesn't support them.
April 10, 2025 at 8:20 PM
Not exactly. Dollars are hugely important to local, state and federal treasuries. And we do have a progressive tax structure that actually works per the chart below. I'd argue for additional brackets, closing loopholes and a stout AMT but eating the rich is a bad (and historically losing) argument.

The top 1% of earners in the U.S. account for approximately 26.3% of the total adjusted gross income (AGI), based on recent data and pay 45.8% of the total income taxes paid.
