I find this take baffling. The US collected $118B of "new" tariff revenue in 2025 versus 2024, which is something like ~7% of the annual deficit of $1.8T. Meanwhile, Trump's Big Beautiful Bill adds $3.4T to the deficit over the next 10 years, but yields have fallen consistently since it was passed.

I am missing the connection between Confederate slavers and Western power, would love the author to draw that line more clearly

Hard to say if this peace deal is going to last out the month.

lots of juicy reporting in this story, but some grubby factionalism in the Trump family as Donald Trump Jr.'s friend and Tiffany Trump's father-in-law battle over African mining concessions wrung out of a "US-brokered" "peace deal"

I'll know we're really in the space age when I have an actual picture of this, but JPL has announced that the NISAR satellite has unfurled its huge goofy radar antenna

one of my favorite genres of space photo is satellites capturing images of rockets ahead of launch—here's ULA's Vulcan ahead of a mission planned for 7:59 pm ET tonight.

pretty cool image from the US-French Surface Water and Ocean Topography satellite, which measured the height of the recent Pacific tsunami. That data (the white stripe) is used to calibrate models prepared by NOAA scientists (the underlay) that provide accurate warnings to coastal communities.
