which meant it was harder and harder for anything to stay hidden. Hard if not impossible to adapt - closest thing would be Fringe, which traded distrust of the govt for distrust of corporations and irrelevancy of the govt.

My thesis generally is that two competing forces just meant the x files wasn't going to survive: 9/11 (first the flood of belief the US govt could do no wrong, then the flood of belief that it was largely incompetent), and then technological shifts like mid 2000s internet and cellphone cameras,
