I presume this to have been carved by Solomon Ashley, who was born in Deerfield, and about whom @gravestones-ne.bsky.social made a nice little reel about recently.

Photographed at the end of a sunny afternoon in March 2024, at Old Deerfield Burying Ground, in Deerfield, Massachusetts. I’m pretty certain this stone is actually grey, maybe even black, but it caught the golden hour light such that it came out white in all my photographs.

Not sure about half of my transcription, and the last two lines I’ve largely borrowed from a transcription on findagrave, as they were largely buried when I visited.

Photographed at Old Town Cemetery in Rockland, Massachusetts, on a cold afternoon in December 2025. Most of the older graves were very shallowly carved or very plain; this one stood out from others of this style as an example that was carved with relative finesse.

In case you find the inscription as ambiguous as I do, Mary “Molley” Bettey died in 1757 according to findagrave. Andrew Bettey married another Mary in 1758, and she outlived him.

Photographed on an early morning dash through Forefathers Burial Ground in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, in November 2025.

Is it an umbrella, or something else, that hangs over the angel? I’ve seen this motif before, on its own, on other graves in Massachusetts.

The verse seems to be from a hymn called “The Grave Shall Restore Its Trust,” though I’m hesitant to infer the phrase at the end of the last line, as it doesn’t (quite) seem to match “nor anxious fear.” There may be additional lines buried under this one.
