When fans chant and drums echo through Providence Park, it is easy to get swept up in the excitement of a Portland Timbers match. However, behind the scenes, every goal and gravity-defying save is a story of a public-private partnership that reshaped an aging stadium into a state-of-the-art venue, thanks partly to taxpayer dollars and city planning. To secure an MLS expansion franchise, the City of Portland and Timbers owner Peregrine Sports LLC agreed in 2010 to overhaul the aging facility. Details of that bargain appear in the FY 2014-15 Adopted Budget, Volume 2.

Timbers Tally They went on the road, and they took a step backward. Following a big victory against Austin FC, the Timbers went to Nashville. They played a match they never really seemed to be in. Slow starts to the season did not stop Portland in their three trips to the MLS Cup, but it is starting to feel bigger than signing one more center-back that will bring everything together. Without stability at the back, there is no platform to attack, and matches are ugly. This week, the Green and Gold come home to face the LA Galaxy, who have had a slow start to this season.

The boys in Green and Gold do not have a history of starting a season well, but it is hard to remember one that started so poorly on the defensive side. The Portland Timbers have one win and two losses while ranking near the bottom of the league in most defensive categories. Too many senseless cards, bad tackles in and near the box, lack of defensive identity, and leading the league in shots against are not signs of a backline that just needs a tweak or two to figure things out.

A lot of guys will get their first MLS away game agains Nashville this week. Portland really need to build on last weeks victory where they played better across the field and really seemed to have the base that the season will be built on figured out. It was only one match but when only two have been played we have to go off of what we have in front of us. Any result this week would be considered a success and the Green and Gold are up for it.
