Speaking as a climatologist, I'd say this not true for the majority of my colleagues, nor for myself. Scientific curiosity is not tied to societal relevance.

The Dutch government is doing the same, just after imposing massive cuts to scientific funding. Myself and other Dutch scientists are quite unhappy about this - the last bit of career perspective we had just got crushed, and now they suddenly have money for this? Political theatre...
