Like, my millenial boyfriend has never heard it in his life, which is crazy to me because it fits into the Disney ‘I Want’ song canon perfectly. Most modern efforts completely lack that it factor.

*Although, I'm super biased here as somebody who grew up very sheltered on a semi-rural island.

(just finished the jacinthe arc and it's easily the funniest thing in any Pokémon game, like, try not to say mother challenge)

And of course, native readings of kanji, which are like if English people started writing ‘bœuf’ but continued to pronounce it ‘cow’ sometimes.

The big difference being that while English reached the UK *after* the Romans pulled out, and therefore got most of its romance influence from French post-1066, Japanese has often imported the same kanji multiple times, which would be like getting Latin, something more like Italian, and then French.

The way I always explain it is that Chinese is to east Asia what French once was to western Europe. Simple words to do with peasant stuff are usually native, as is grammar, while more elevated stuff is completely different morphologically because it came from the élite, who used another language.

been learning lately, and I know I'm coming to Japanese through Chinese and all, but I genuinely find kanji to be wayyyyy easier than kana. my textbook starting with only hiragana is only creatingn extra work for me.
