I should known I’d have to fight my way out. Should have had the exit routes through the maze of desks scoped out before the bell rang. Now the teacher—Mr. L-something, I couldn't remember—had spotted me standing frozen in the middle of the stampede for the classroom door.

Meet 12yo Kai Zhang. He’s determined not to be a bother. He def doesn’t need Mom to pack his lunch, or Dad to pick him up from school—not that they’ve been able to since Grandma got sick & Mom disappeared.
But maybe he’ll learn that it’s okay to ask for help when you need it?

12yo Kai Zhang certainly didn’t need his foil-wielding friend Sophia to tag along on his rescue mission to the mythical, memory-sapping realm his Mom disappeared into. But maybe Sophia’s fencing skills can be useful in getting them home—if only he can learn to ask for help.
