People expect children to see their parents as just people first well into their adulthood when they have made their own litany of mistakes. To be seen in that light by a child accurately and clinically calling you out on things that the other adults around you aren't talking about is a shock.

It's easier to say "I'm an asshole" than to say, "I'm sad." Grief work is hard, but it is so freeing when you do it. When you accept the things that you will never be able to get from certain people, situations, and things. Living in the fulness of what is, and seeing the green pastures all around.

What an achievement vaccines are. What a monument to our love for each other it is to stare straight into the face of something as horrific and unstoppable as smallpox or measles or polio or cervical cancer and say “You know what, it doesn’t have to be like this.”
