Everyone hustles here. Mariachis congregate not too far away, awaiting customers. What other neighborhoods have that?! These are things that make a neighborhood colorful. Let’s brace ourselves and look out for one another for we do not know what’s to come.

The birria from the truck parked on the busy boulevard is delicious. The bakeries emit the beautiful smell of freshly baked pan dulce. Such a contrast to the poisonous emissions from all the freeways that surround this neighborhood. Dogs bark as residents leave early to their jobs.

This is simply a change of the times. An immigrant neighborhood once less congested with single family homes, is now dense with no street parking. I can get melancholic about the change but then I remember that there are taco stands in every direction.

The parking lot is nearly empty. Just next door to the high school is the brick Catholic elementary school that I attended. It’s small but has a very nice layout with the top floor as the residence for the nuns that taught there. There are no longer any nuns. The school enrollment is minuscule.

of their contributions and love for community. They risk their own health to do laborious work that others won't do. Similar to migrant workers in Kern County that harvest the food we eat. Often times this is done in extreme weather conditions.
