I like machines you can stand up in.
Looks like it’s coming out of what I imagine is the bathroom attached to the Lincoln Bedroom, which is kind of strange - if it was the president’s bedroom we could make all sorts of assumptions, but for the LB we have only weaker assumptions to make. commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wh...

Oh, I got here from the Rolling Stone article btw.

Holy shit, they’re gonna Martha Coakley 2010 the entire party.

While Congress may not have consented legally, they absolutely are consenting to everything this madman does and is. If they wanted to, they could put a stop to all of this within 24 hours.

Let me guess, this is the thing Pete said he had in the works with Verizon and he’s just taking credit for it.

Like Mussolini and the trains.

… Yeah. Yeah.

You went 0-100 there, but I’ll write up a substack sometime.

We aren’t “the best country” and we aren’t entitled to rule the planet, but we also aren’t the worst. We celebrate Italy for their food, France for their art, Germany for their machines and Japan for their electronics. We can celebrate ourselves too. “Limited American exceptionalism”, if you will.

The idea of our great accomplishments being built off of teamwork is also reflected in the nature of the Pax Americana - in the global north, at least, we tended to make people want to work with us, rather than invading and occupying them. (Global south and other areas, not so much.)
April 18, 2025 at 4:49 PM
I didn’t mean to imply an exclusive advantage! I just think that was the foundation a lot of our great accomplishments were built on. Manhattan Project, moon landing, USS Monitor, alternating current, that sort of thing. Lots of stories go “a smart immigrant moved to the U.S. to continue their work”
April 18, 2025 at 4:46 PM
I wouldn’t go that far. The U.S. has always had a bit of a knack for pulling the best talent and ideas from all across the country and planet, and then producing the result at staggering scale. The reason we’re struggling now is because the people in charge think working together is for losers.

To be clear, I mean during the context of the Bretton Woods negotiations. We don’t really have that reputation for reliability anymore.
April 17, 2025 at 4:10 PM
Something about us managing to have a reputation for reliability, the largest military in the west, the largest economy on the planet (at the time), and like two-thirds of the world’s gold reserves, simultaneously.

It’s not the original one. You can tell because the original one (and/or the replicas thereof) are barely, barely legible. You can actually tell there’s text on his from across the room.

Of course, doesn’t make it any less narcissistic.

JFK gave us hope. Trump took it away.

(This is less a call to action and more just something to help me keep going)

I’m gonna be honest, given Balatro’s reputation, that’s probably for the best.

I’d like a recreational digital drug, not Crack 2.
March 19, 2025 at 2:21 AM
The “all you have to do is kill the Bad People and the rest will take care of itself with no further actions” subset is possibly even more draining.
March 2, 2025 at 6:03 AM
Because “evil” is an abstract concept that changes from time to time, from person to person, and arises from every corner.

Corporate damages, on the other hand? Lot easier to legislate. Repairing law enforcement takes some work, but not as much work as “ending evil”.

look I didn’t realize what the song “Rowing with One Hand” was about until I played it in the car in front of my family
