Weirdness. This plant blooms red. But we’ve had over 5 inches of ran in less than a week and now the blooms are pink. I guess I’m surprised that rain could dilute the pigment.

“It never rains in Southern California…it pours”

Never a good start to the rainy season when your sump pump dies. (Pulled out of sump to try to fix)

Hope there are still some available at the local hardware store.

A pink silk floss tree flower from the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden this morning. These trees are really neat and get quite large, with large pointed projections all over the trunk. The fruit produces a floss that yellow chevron parakeets like during nesting season.

Shout out to the NPS employees who are keeping the bathrooms stocked and open even though they aren’t getting paid. You are amazing.

Book recommendation - light reading

Did you enjoy Buffy before we found out about Whedon?

Love stories about found families?

Want to be distracted from The Horrors by... horrors?

I just flew through "Slayers of Old" by Jim C. Hines

Squeeeee! While working in the garden this morning I found this bird nest. Not sure what birds in our area make ground nests this size but still exciting to find.

4 years ago we killed the front lawn. This is the result.

Love having my own microscope at home. Wish I could take better pic through it. This tiny dude was found on my bathroom floor. Some type of drain fly? The abdomen is very dry And maybe collapsed. Ideas?

An October coffee mug. Hand made. Purchased at Ephraim Pottery in Cambria, CA. If you’re ever on the Central Coast of California it’s worth a visit. Very nice pottery.

And, if you’re in the area, be sure to drop by the elephant seal overlook just a few miles north on the PCH.

It’s a stormy day here in Southern California. We’ve already gotten over an inch and a half (3.8 cm) of rain.

This has been my experience, too. Those in power are trying to make us fight each so we don't pay attention to what they are doing.

I was working in the garden and found this nest under some vegetation. The eggs are hard shelled and the nest is on the ground. Just north of LA. Any ideas?

Based on the way the shells are damaged I suspect a predator.

Any advice on housebreaking this girl? She has set up under the kitchen cabinet near both the fruit bowl and the kitchen sink. I tried to set out a litter box just she won’t use it. I’m tired of cleaning up her grass every morning.

On the plus side I haven’t seen any fruit flies since I adopted her

Our first rain in months. Not bad. (Southern California- it's normal not to rain during the summer, rains usually happen in winter)
