maybe if you tell them about the third person by emma grove you can call your graphic novels "medium-sized"

I haven't read RCBG so I can't speak to that comparison, but Hot Girls with Balls is also a satire.

Good to know, I assumed it wouldn't be possible to edit the ballot because you're tracking data throughout the voting period, but perhaps I'll go ahead and submit some partial noms before shortlists
December 8, 2025 at 9:09 PM
Second thought: being able to submit a partial ballot and return to it? I have a fiction nom I would have loved to try to get on the shortlist, but I don't want to submit my whole ballot yet

Two thoughts that I wonder if they would be possible/fit your goals:
A public list of all books that have received at least one vote? Or a publicly assembled list of all books that fit the category whether or not the person who adds them thinks it was the best in category?

I don't know what options are out there other than Trans / Rad / Fem, so I was planning to cram after the shortlist drops and try to vote then. This is a problem I have with other award categories too, I love the democratic part of the awards but it's hard when I just don't know what to read

Sounds like 3 star Yone's ability - if not Yone, it's probably a different 3 star 5 cost, they all have abilities that one shot your team.

I basically agree! But it sucks when people act like it's a perfect solution that harms nobody, so I wanted to respond. It's impossible to never make a trans person uncomfortable with the way you're gendering them, so it's important to acknowledge that and know how to deal with it when it happens.
November 5, 2025 at 10:53 PM
Yes, it has been used as a gender neutral pronoun for ages. Some trans people are not gender neutral and don't like to be referred to with gender neutral pronouns. I'm not suggesting you should change what you are doing, but it is important that you know you are still making an assumption.
November 5, 2025 at 10:40 PM
I do want to note that you are still making an assumption, just a different one. You are assuming it's okay to use they/them for that person, which may not be true. Especially since you say you use they/them "when you're not 100% sure" this is likely to disproportionately impact trans women.

Wow, do you see a lot of success from autoscraping search results for "SFF" and reposting with some kind of platitudinous drivel?
October 31, 2025 at 12:47 AM
From other replies, seconding Woodworking by Emily St. James, Jeanne Thornton's books (especially A/S/L), Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, Hazel Jane Plante's books (especially Little Blue (Encyclopedia for Vivian)), Casey Plett.

If you haven't read Detransition, Baby yet, it's also great.

Haven't seen anyone mention Hot Girls With Balls by Benedict Nguyễn or When The Harvest Comes by Denne Michele Norris (one of the best books I've read in the past couple years). SFF options: The Seep by Chana Porter, The Hades Calculus by Maria Ying, The Sapling Cage by Margaret Killjoy (mildly YA)

This is so cool! But I think your DMs are closed?
October 20, 2025 at 6:11 PM
yeah this sounds so so scary but selfishly it would be so so cool to see you write a manifesto and then self-assess your output against it (thinking of maro's state of design articles which are such a treasure)

One of the Boys!

Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki - sci-fi & fantasy centering the relationships between several different women
The Library Thief by Kuchenga Shenjé - historical fiction exploring race and gender politics
The Sapling Cage by Margaret Killjoy - high fantasy, trans girl joins a witch coven

Ah, yeah, definitely agreed there. One of the first things I did when I got StoryGraph was bookmark that page
June 15, 2025 at 8:44 PM
Not trying especially hard to sell you on StoryGraph, but just curious: do StoryGraph tags not fulfill this purpose for you?
