i feel like balanced/msv is kind of how duolingo and many second language teachers teach? as opposed to dedicating a significant amount of time to phonics, even if many other languages might not need it as much (i think?)

im really really interested now to see if there is any correlation between literacy/reading proficiency and language, like if on average speakers of X are better readers in their language than Y because their language is more "phonetic" (ES, JP) than another (EN) or vice versa
