It recruits those who are attracted to the retconned narrative, deters those unfamiliar from engaging with the source material, and bastardizes the original intent of the author. I'd be spinning in my grave if I were Orwell.

Or worse, you make it so bland, so unappealing, so off-putting that you scare off any interest in a work that could possibly reframe someone's views and make them critical of the world around them.

It's insidious - get a close enough read of the themes of the book, then recontextualize the rest of it to sloppily fit your viewpoint, and now you can hide your vile ideals under the guise of an "alternate" take of an established author's work.
