Protecting privacy with Tails [Distributions] Posted Nov 11, 2025 15:04 UTC (Tue) by jzb Tails is an unusual Linux distribution developed by the Tor Project; it is designed to help users work around internet censorship and avoid surveillance. It is a "portable" operating system that is meant to be run from a USB stick or ISO image and to leave no trace on the computer it was run on. Tails routes connections to the internet over the Tor network and includes a selection of applications and tools suited to working with sensitive documents, communicating securely, and preserving users' anonymity. The tradeoff, of course, is that Tails is less convenient and requires users to learn a new set of tools to avoid compromising their own security and anonymity. Tails 7.1 was released in October, and it seemed like as good a time as any to take it for a spin.

Namespace reference counting and listns() By Jonathan Corbet November 3, 2025 The kernel's namespaces feature is, among other things, a key part of the implementation of containers. Like much in the kernel, though, the namespace API evolved over time; there was no design at the outset. As a result, this API has some rough edges and missing features. Christian Brauner is working to straighten out the namespace situation somewhat with this daunting 72-part patch series that, among other things, adds a new system call to allow user space to query the namespaces present on the system. The original namespace type, now called mount namespaces, was introduced by Al Viro as just "namespaces" in 2001 (they were briefly covered in LWN at the time). UTS namespaces (which provide a different view of the system's host name), process-ID namespaces (managing the visibility of processes), and IPC namespaces (controlling the view of the System V inter-process communication features) followed as part of the 2.6.19 release in 2006. Each namespace type was added when the need arose and somebody was moved to implement it. As the use of namespaces has grown, though, some of the problems in their implementation have become more apparent.

We try to be diligent and review all our content, and we often age restrict films we don't think are appropriate for young viewers, etc. Sometimes though, the historic content we post gets flagged by bots or reported by offended viewers. These screenshots show a typical interaction -- someone reported a WWII era fascist German propaganda newsreel as "hate speech". The content was blocked and we were sent to what you might call "YouTube jail". We appealed, citing the fact that we provided a detailed explanation at the start of the newsreel that contextualized the content. Fortunately in this case, the process worked out as it should - the content was reviewed and reinstated. (Doesn't mean we didn't sweat it out, because if the infraction stuck, it would represent a big problem!) You can see the newsreel in question at: https://youtu.be/ fhmJ4x0y9us

Retrieving pixels from Android phones with Pixnapping By Jake Edge October 29, 2025 A new class of attacks on Android phones, called "Pixnapping", was announced on October 13. It allows a malicious app to gather output rendered in a victim app, pixel-by-pixel, by exploiting a GPU side-channel. Depending on what the victim app displays, anything from sensitive email and chats to two-factor authentication (2FA) codes could be captured—and shipped off to an attacker's site. As noted in the Pixnapping paper (with seven authors from various universities), pixel-stealing attacks are not new. They were described in 2013 in the context of web browsers, using iframes and SVG filters; since then, browsers have largely mitigated those kinds of attacks with various restrictions. Pixnapping applies the ideas behind pixel stealing to Android's apps, completely outside of the browser context—though the browser is also an app so it can also be targeted. The demo video on the Pixnapping site shows a malicious app relaying 2FA credentials from the Google Authenticator app in less than the 30-second timeout, which allowed the "attacker" to log into a Reddit account.

For many people, Git simply works, though perhaps in quirky ways, so the activity of its development community may not often appear on their radar. There is a lot happening in the Git world at the moment, though, as the project works toward a 3.0 release sometime in 2026. Topics of interest in the Git community include the SHA-256 transition, the introduction of code written in Rust, and how the project should view contributions created with the assistance of large language models.

The initial work is funded by a donation from FSF board member John Gilmore, who explained, "I have enjoyed using a mobile phone running LineageOS with MicroG and F-Droid for years, which eliminates the spyware and control that Google embeds in standard Android phones. I later discovered that the LineageOS distribution links in significant proprietary binary modules copied from the firmware of particular phones. Rather than accept this sad situation, I looked for collaborators to reverse-engineer and replace those proprietary modules with fully free software, for at least one modern phone."

It's normal for post-quantum cryptography to be rolled out as an extra layer of security on top of traditional pre-quantum cryptography, rather than as a replacement. For example, Google's CECPQ1 experiment was double encryption with traditional pre-quantum ECC (specifically X25519) and post-quantum NewHope1024. CECPQ2, a joint experiment between Google and Cloudflare, was ECC+NTRUHRSS701. CECPQ2b was ECC+SIKEp434. Ten SSH implementations support ECC+sntrup761. Today's usage of post- quantum cryptography by browsers is approaching half of the connections seen by Cloudfiare, where 95% of that is ECC+MLKEM768 and 5% is ECC+Kyber768 If post-quantum cryptography is designed to be super-strong, so strong that it even survives future quantum computers, then why are we keeping the ECC layer? Same reason that you wear your seatbelt: in the real world, cars sometimes crash, and seatbelts reduce the damage.
