That this post is posing a hypothetical obviously went over a lot of people’s heads, but even understanding that, I’m not quite sure what you’re getting at. Are you saying that “austerity” won’t be politically viable?

Nor does that have anything to do with what political ads are run in other countries. (e.g., the Canada Reagan ad)

I think he was getting at re-shoring. But of course that argument is gutted by the fact that you can’t, say, grow bananas or coffee here.

I’m sure there are ways to repackage and rebrand these policies in a coherent and appealing fashion. The tariff policy could be something like: “Congressional checks on import taxes.” Stock trading could be pitched as “Leveling the playing field” or “Government accountability” or something.

I don't think the NYT has a particularly outsized influence on political outcomes in this country, but that doesn't make its abject failure as a notable member of the Fourth Estate any less infuriating.

Conservatism at its root is fear / resistance to change to go back to a better world from the past; whereas progressivism at its root is embracing change for a better world in the future.

At the end of the day, people are beings with agency. Perhaps policymakers should address some of the systemic issues that are helping to drive the speculative behavior. You can only protect people from themselves so much before they resent you for it, and ignore you besides.
