You might not think about the Ocean as much as we marine scientists do, but our modern life is enabled by the deep sea. Whether we're watching TikToks, Bluesky, streaming, video call across the globe or get the latest NYT recipe, most of our data are routed through cables on/in the seafloor.

With flights being cancelled all across the country one can only dream how it would be if we would have a decent high speed train network. At times the TSA lines at IAH were twice the time it would take the proposed Shinkansen-style train from Houston to Dallas.

Reminds me of the famous (infamous?) weighing club on R/V Polarstern where the pilots always pay close attention that no one who’s scheduled on a helo-flight exceeds the safety weight limit.

Few yrs ago, approaching the Antarctic Amundsen Sea, we encountered a giant "pumpkin" bobbing in the waves. As we always try to collect trash, we stopped & hauled it aboard. Turned out it was a Chinese buoy that was lost in Prydz Bay, on the other side of the continent, 5yrs before!
Happy Halloween!

Just wow! @esaearth.esa.int's Sentinel-2 satellite took this unbelievable image of Cat 5 Hurricane #Melissa during landfall. Look at these details!
Melissa is one of only seven sub-900mb Atlantic hurricanes on record, four of which occurred in the past 20 years!

Hurricane Melissa has developed into a Category 4 hurricane, maximum sustained winds have increased to 140 mph (220 km/h) according to the NHC. Just look at the size of that thing S of Jamaica. Hope people can stay safe.

Just began @peterbrannen.bsky.social's new book and already came across this gem 🤌 „If you really wanna have good fun, be a geologist. Geologists often know 2 or 3 languages and they always know the best places to drink.“ followed by a shout-out to IODP, the JR, and Exp399. Promising start!

How cool is this? A LEGO Argo Float! Thanks for the inspo @mbarinews.bsky.social! "Treated" everyone in the brick store to a 5min ad-hoc talk why Argo Floats are so cool and important. Shouldn't have asked what I'm building 🙃

Cool new Exp382 study out in @natcomms.nature.com showing an extreme poleward shift of ACC during the last interglacial.
The coolest thing is that it confirms our 2024 results using fast and non-destructive XRF. 🤩

For me that's one of the most powerful pics of what sea level rise means and should be a warning to us. There are the remains of terrestrial ecosystems on what's now the bottom of the sea. I once got a baby mammoth tooth from a fisherman who pulled it up from the bottom of the N. Sea.

Back from a 105mi bike race through the TX Hill Country where the July floods caused unspeakable devastation (race fees went to flood relief). It's hard to directly attribute specific rain events to climate change, but we know that storms like these become more likely as CC worsens.

While the death toll caused directly by these storms is decreasing since the 30s, the excess mortality can have a decades long tail caused by 1) economic disruption, 2) social network changes, 3) a state's budget changes, 4) exposure to harmful substances, and 5) physical & mental stress

Few years ago, French science magazine Science & Vie used some of my photos to illustrate the outlandish proposals of building massive pillars on the seafloor to hold back glaciers, or a km-high underwater wall around the continent to block warm deep-water. 🤪
