I get a free cup of coffee whenever I buy coffee beans: can they tax that?

The cardinal skill of Westminster Bubblism is to be able to hold two things in your mind—
(1) On the inside, everyone thinks they are the Main Character
(2) On the outside, no-one cares.

There’s a Keanu Reeves quote where he says "I'm at that stage in life where I stay out of discussions. Even if you say 1+1=5, you're right - have fun.” He’s like the John Stuart Mill for the 2-girls-1-cup generation.

Article makes some interesting points, but how long before AI companies start selling space to companies to tilt results in their favour (a la Google etc)? To make profit, these AI companies will need to enshitify at some point.

Very important article! I think many of us were left agog by a certain former judge’s intervention in the Bates v Post Office recusal application.

But what will guarantee the death of the convention is the continued complacency about judges’ working conditions.

This is crazy although it’s a tad click-baity to say the road “doesn’t exist”.

That article weirdly slips in “There are some, however, that support the proposed taxes.” as if being anti-gambling is a kooky position and then goes onto say—

Always liked that track but it goes on a bit and is annoying to mix out of

This is the connoisseur curse. I know coffee guys who have spent thousands chasing ‘perfect’ espresso and seemingly kind of hate coffee now.

Some of the little summaries are very funny. The Rookes v Barnard one:

“With no regard for the political sensitivities surrounding the regulation of strike action, the Law Lords developed the economic tort of intimidation…”

Er, so the common law should just reflect ‘political sensitivities’. Huh!

My reflection on Starmer is that there have been moments as a lawyer when I’ve thought maybe I should give politics a go; but his experience tells me - absolutely no-way! It’s really hard and being a good lawyer is not the training ground it used to be.

I notice the article doesn’t refer to Erskine May: erskinemay.parliament.uk/section/4606...
Members summoned as witnesses - Erskine May - UK Parliament
Information on the 'Members summoned as witnesses' section of Erskine May.

All I’ve heard from those inside is that Starmer & Wormald are two peas in a pod: neither of them willing to show any leadership at a time when the country needs it most

Remember when people used to say that Johnson was the worst-timed PM? An ideal time for Starmer to be PM was probably 10,000BC

I also thing the survey / valuation industry needs to have a word with itself - too often valuations are just run off Zoopla numbers.

There’s a steak thing at Tesco which I’ve been using as an inflation tracker. It’s now £7.30 (!) for two slices of poor quality off-cuts - but for some reason they’re still happy to chuck it into an £8 deal (which used to a be a £5 deal)
