There's absolutely this NYC-centered fantasy of what street gangs were/are like, probably going back to West Side Story. I lived in Chicago in the late 70s/early 80s, and there were neighborhood gangs all over the place, but I didn't spot them as such; a lot of them wore their colors on cardigans.
